4 Summer Activities That Will Keep Seniors Cool
The summer days are heating up. That can increase the chances that seniors will experience a heat-related illness if they’re not careful. Seniors are much more likely than other age groups to suffer from hyperthermia and other heat related illnesses. Seniors are more susceptible to heat-related illness because of risk factors like:
- Age-related changes to the skin such as poor blood circulation and inefficient sweat glands
- Heart, lung, and kidney diseases, as well as any illness that causes general weakness or fever
- High blood pressure or other conditions that require changes in diet, such as salt-restricted diets
- Reduced sweating, caused by medications such as diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and certain heart and blood pressure drugs
- Taking several drugs for various conditions (It is important, however, to continue to take prescribed medication and discuss possible problems with a physician.)
- Being substantially overweight or underweight
- Drinking alcoholic beverages
- Being dehydrated
But seniors can’t just sit at home all summer. That’s not good for physical or mental health. If your senior parent is looking for activities that they can do in hot weather that will keep them cool these activities are great for seniors and can also be done with a caregiver:
Swimming
Swimming is a fun summer activity for seniors. At the beach or at the pool seniors can cool off by taking a swim in the cool water. Seniors with companion care at home will have help changing into their bathing suite or packing swimming supplies if they need it. Companion care at home makes going to the pool and other activities more fun. Seniors should always take a quick shower after swimming to get any chemicals or salt water off their skin. It’s also a good idea for them to wash their hair.
Going Out For Ice Cream
Most towns have a local ice cream place where everyone likes to go. These classic family-friendly locally owned businesses are extremely popular. But seniors can go during the afternoons to avoid any big crowds. Ice cream always tastes better when it’s eaten outside on a hot summer day.
Going To A Movie
A summer day is a great time for seniors to go see a movie. It doesn’t matter if it’s the latest blockbuster or a film festival of old movies. Movie theaters are comfortable, and they have great air conditioning. Seniors will be able to enjoy a movie in the cool darkness while they avoid the searing hot outdoors. If your senior parent doesn’t have central air and needs a safe and cool place to spend some time on a hot day the movie theater is a great option.
Going To The Senior Center
Your senior parent may also enjoy spending the day at the senior center. When they’re at the senior center seniors have a lot of activity options. There are exercise classes for seniors. And seniors can join other seniors to do things like talk, make crafts, listen to live music, and more.
