Art & Music Can Heal! Thank you ADRC and the Parrish Art Museum!
Good afternoon. Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Art for Alzheimer’s 2nd Annual benefit reception at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, hosted by the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center. At Artful Home Care we are thankful to understand the benefits of engaging the brain in creative exercises that can provide cognitive stimulation, physical relaxation and a sense of accomplishment. However this concept is still growing as more people are educated and become aware of the healing that can take place through the creative Arts. At the event I had a chance to witness many people moved by seeing this concept for the very first time. The guests of the event had the chance to watch the film, “I Remember Better When I Paint” a documentary by Eric Elena and Berna Huebner, Narrated by Olivia de Havilland. Check out their website HERE. This film highlights the significant value in creative exploration, and shows us that with a little prompting you will be quite surprised to see people with cognitive impairment light up and express themselves through art!
There is another amazing film that shares the significant value of music and memory. “Alive Inside” is a documentary that shares the stories of a few individuals with Alzheimer’s who haven’t spoken, let alone expressed many emotions in some time, yet once music from their memory is played, their minds and eyes open and their voices come alive! Check it out HERE. And if you want to get started helping your loved one come alive and hear the music of their time, click HERE to access the alive inside tool you can use to get started!
We are so grateful for programs such as the Paint at the Parrish, which gives individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia and their caregivers a chance to experience the healing nature of art and creation. Visit the Parrish Art Museum website to learn about this free monthly program offered by the ADRC.
