Do You Have Your Own Health Goals as a Caregiver?
You’re probably familiar with how well health goals work to keep your aging adult on target, but did you know that they can work for you, too? As a family caregiver, you have to be in the best condition possible so that you can keep being there for your elderly family member.
-Physical Health Goals
Physical health goals are those that help you to stay healthy on a physical level. This might involve exercising more, changing how you eat, or even visiting your own doctor more often. If you have existing health conditions, you need to know what you have to do in order to manage those conditions effectively. If it helps, pretend you’re thinking about your senior’s physical health goals.
-Mental Health Goals
Your mental health involves your emotional and mental health, both. If you’re prone to depression or you aren’t socializing much beyond your aging adult, you may need to make some big changes. You might set a goal to meet other family caregivers, for example, or to get back to doing a hobby that you love. Even sitting down to read a book to take you away from it all is a good way to keep up mental health.
-Take the Time to Think about Changes You Want to Make
Once you are ready to start outlining your goals, sit down with a pen and a piece of paper. Begin by writing down what changes you want to make. Get as specific with yourself as you can so that you can really dig deep into those changes. From there, you can start to work out what it would take for you to meet each goal you’ve worked out.
-Establish a Plan and Stick with It
Step by step, you’re going to be working out a plan for your health goals. Your plan might include trying a new way of eating or starting a walking program at your office. Once you can see the various steps on the way to your goals, you’ve got a plan. The next thing you need to do is to stick with your plan.
Once you have some goals, keep track of them in a journal or log. Revisit your goals periodically to ensure that you’re staying on track and make new goals when you’ve reached your old ones.
