What to do when Your Aging Parent has Insomnia
Home Care in Hampton Bays NY
When we are not getting enough sleep, it can cause a major shift in our behavior, mood, and eating habits. Even the happiest, most relaxed person can become agitated and short-tempered if they are not getting an adequate amount of sleep. The mind and body of older adults changes frequently as they age, and one common problem is a change in sleep patterns.
Insomnia can cause an elderly adult to lack concentration, causing them to have a problem caring for themselves. Many of these seniors require the help of a home care provider in order to complete any tasks that their lack of sleep has made it too difficult to accomplish alone. If this is a condition your loved one is going through, here are some ways to help them overcome their sleep deprivation in order to become their old selves once again.
- Think about environmental issues. Is your loved one under a lot of stress? Are they depressed or anxious? Or could they be taking medication that is affecting their sleep? Try to pinpoint what the problem could be in order to provide a solution that will help.
- Create a bedtime routine. Create a strict bedtime routine and stick to it. It could consist of some time before bed where the elder can become more relaxed by taking a bath, reading, or doing something else relaxing. After a while of going to bed at the same time, the elder’s body will automatically begin to get into sleep mode when it is time to sleep.
- Take care of yourself. A healthy diet and exercise are not only great for the body, but can also promote a better night’s sleep. Encourage your loved one to drink plenty of water throughout the day, limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, and eat their last meal of the day three hours before bedtime. Make sure they do not drink any more liquids an hour before bed because it could cause incontinence. Exercising early in the day can also help by releasing chemicals in the body that will help the elder sleep better.
- Relax. Stress can trigger insomnia, so it is important your loved one know how to manage their stress levels. If something is bothering them, have them either write down their concern or talk to you or a home care provider about it. Listening to calming music, getting a massage, reading a relaxing book, and meditating are all ways to reduce stress.
If these tips do not help, talk to their doctor about the elder’s insomnia. They can prescribe medication to help your loved one sleep more peacefully at night.
