What Activities Can You and Your Elderly Loved One Try for National Color Therapy Month?
Chromotherapy, more commonly called color therapy, is the science of using color and light to help assist with physical and psychological changes in the body. For your elderly loved one, color therapy can go a long way toward helping her with her mood and with depression. Here are some activities you might consider doing with her during National Color Therapy Month.
Old School Coloring
Coloring can often be scoffed at because it’s an activity that mostly kids enjoy, but your loved one can get quite a bit out of it, too. There is even a whole market devoted to adult coloring books now. You can find these almost everywhere, but you can also find websites devoted to offering coloring pages for adults that you can download for free and print out.
Painting
Coloring, whether it’s with crayons or colored pencils, can require quite a bit of manual dexterity from your elderly loved one. Painting, including finger painting, doesn’t require as much in terms of manual dexterity. Plus your loved one might enjoy the feel of the finger paints against her skin as she creates new masterpieces.
Manipulating Colored Pieces
Some people just don’t enjoy coloring or painting and that’s okay, too. Another option is to go ahead and cut colored construction paper into a variety of shapes. Then your loved one can manipulate these and put them together in different ways to create pictures that way. She can also create abstracts. Another option is to find colored mosaic tiles and use those for the same kind of activity.
Mixing Food Coloring
Food coloring is so fun to drip into water and watch as it swirls around. Your loved one might especially enjoy mixing different colors to create a variety of colors and shades. It also doesn’t require a lot of attention or manual dexterity, so your loved one can do this even if her attention span is a little short.
Dyeing Eggs
Every time of the year is perfect for dyeing eggs, really, even though it’s primarily an Easter activity. You and your loved one can mix up the colors and practice with all sorts of dyeing techniques to get the results that you like the best. Play around until you get the looks you want.
Having home care providers around can give your loved one an opportunity to incorporate color therapy into her daily activities.
