Let’s Think About Some Summer Goals for Your Senior
Most people think the new year is meant for new goals, but that isn’t always true. Sometimes the best time to set a new goal is summer when things slow down, days become longer, and there is more time to be outside and work towards goals independently. During the winter, a senior may be cooped up or rely on home care to do things like grocery shop or any chore out of the house. Summer is the perfect season to reset in the warmth, meet seniors’ outside goals, and create new opportunities for them to join. This is when more things open up, and your senior and home care provider can work together to keep busy. Here are some summer goals to consider!
Create a Family Cookbook
Although a senior can cook during the winter, it can be too cold and they can be unmotivated to cook. Many seniors may go for prepared meals or ask home care to help them prepare meals during the winter. On the other hand, during the summer, they may feel more motivated to cook for themselves. This is a chance to go to the farmers market and buy fresh foods and then create their own recipes or make family recipes, writing down each step. You can help them create a full book of their favorite recipes to save for your kids and even your great-grandkids.
Go to the Farmers Market
Some cities host indoor farmers markets in local greenhouses and other indoor areas, but the truth is there isn’t much food that grows in this weather. During the spring, things start blooming, and in the summer, things start getting picked, and this is when the farmers market is in full force. This is a chance for seniors to get fresh cuts of food and use them in the kitchen. It also is a chance for them to get outside and in the sunshine.
It’s Time to Declutter
Summer is the perfect time to go through a senior’s home and get rid of the trash collected during the winter or donate things to thrift stores or churches. It’s warm enough to clean and open up the windows, letting the light in, and it will help your loved one feel good! Although this can be done any time of the year, something is rewarding about decluttering in the summer.
Sit Outside and Read
If your elderly parent loves to read books or even the newspaper, this is the best season to sit outside and read. Move their favorite chair on their porch and let them sip their tea in the mornings outside with a good book or their newspaper. It’s another chance to sneak outside while doing something relaxing they love.
Write in the Sunshine
Just like reading, sitting in the sun can spark creativity to start writing. It’s a chance to write about feelings and life experiences. Whatever they write can be printed for the family or kept personal. Writing in the sun can be therapeutic for your loved one, and it can be something easy to add to their daily routine.
